Foreign Minister Oana Țoiu stated, at Digi24, referring to the violation of Romania's airspace by a drone of Russia, that the solidarity message of NATO and EU countries is important as Moscow resorts to such challenges throughout the North Atlantic Alliance.
Oana Țoiu said that the Russian ambassador to Bucharest Vladimir Lipaev was summoned to the headquarters of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs during the Sunday evening.
“He is summoned and he will come this evening at 6,” said Țoiu. Asked what he hopes to get as a result of this meeting, the Foreign Minister replied: “We do not expect to obtain something to communicate the protest of Romania very clearly.”
“For us it is very important to send a clear (…) unity message along with our NATO allies because these incidents take place throughout the Eastern Flank,” said Oana Țoiu.
She said that Romania's partners from the EU and NATO were informed about Saturday's incident. Among the telephone calls was one with the German Foreign Minister, in which Țoiu thanked for the contribution of the two Eurofighter aircraft of German military aviation, Luftwaffe, to the interception and patrol mission.
“It is very important for people to know that they are safe, that the allies are with us and that the Romanian army is ready for defense and discouragement operations,” said the minister.
Oana Țoiu said that the solidarity of the allies with Romania in front of the Russian challenges will be demonstrated soon. “We are working with our partners in the 19 sanctions package and you will see the reaction of our solidarity partners with Romania,” said Țoiu.
