What name are forbidden in Romania. In recent years, parents have proposed first names like television, insulating or orange

As it is known, parents cannot choose any name for their children, because the Civil Code imposes clear limits to protect the integrity, reputation and well -being of minors.

According to article 84, paragraph 2, the civil status officer may refuse to register the indecent, ridiculous or that could affect the public order and good morals.

Since 2011, civil status officers can no longer register first names associated with known historical personalities against humanity or dictatorships, such as: Adolf Hitler, Benito Mussolini, Iosif Stalin or Vladimir Lenin. The historical or military names such as “Napoleon” are not forbidden, being considered neutral or traditional in other cultures.

Although the name “Osama” or “Abu Bakr“Individual can be accepted, the combinations are forbidden “Osama bin Laden” or “Abu Bakr al-Bagdadi”.

Parents who choose to name their children by biblical or mythological characters must take into account that names such as Saint Peter, Christ, Sântămări, Zeus, ISIS, Thor, Satan or Dracula are not accepted.

The same thing happens with names inspired by the popular culture and the universe of superheroes, such as Spider-Man, Superman, Batman or Iron Man. The purpose of these restrictions is to protect the minors from names that could affect their reputation or they could embarrass their social development.

In recent years, parents have proposed first names such as Amorel, Lemon, Gratgurel, TV, swallow, ostrich, insulatinge, orange, papoanaas, expertise, feeling-brout, făt-Frumos, Leuștean, Semafor, Million or Seif. They are now rejected by the civil status officer.

According to the Statistical Yearbook of Romania in 2016, there are thousands of people with first names inspired by animals, birds, fruits, colors, trees or objects, the most common are:

  • Curcă (4.618)
  • Buc (2.996)
  • Flocea (1,728)
  • Pussy (1,628)
  • SULA/SULA (1.123)
  • Paw (881)
  • Crazy (850)
  • Bounegru (611)

Other examples include Polish, patron, lemon, nipple, president or expertise. This list reflects the creativity of parents, but also the need for child protection against names that can affect their reputation or integrity.
