Stephen Miller, deputy head of the White House Policy in the Trump administration and one of Washington's most influential advisers, said in the Sunday Morning Futures that Trump expressed in recent discussions is a clear one: India should stop purchasing Russian oil.
“What Trump said very clearly is that it is not acceptable for India to continue to finance this war by purchasing oil from Russia,” said Stephen Miller.
The American counselor stressed that the public will be “shocked” to find out that India is at the same level as China in terms of oil imports from Russia. “He is amazing”, Miller commented.
His statements are among the most critical public positions of the Trump team towards New Delhi, one of the main US strategic partners in the Indo-Pacific region.
India ignores pressure
So far, the Embassy of India in Washington has not provided an official response. However, Indian government sources sent on Saturday, for Reuters, that India will continue their commercial relations with Russia, despite the pressures from the United States.
On Friday, a 25% customs tariff for Indian products entered into force, in reaction to the acquisitions made by India in the field of military and energy equipment.
In addition, Donald Trump has threatened up to 100% rates on imports from countries that continue to buy Russian oil, if Moscow does not reach a significant peace agreement with Ukraine.
