The ambassador's departure occurred after the article was published in the Austrian Der Standard, in which Oberreiter's name was associated with a sexual blog. The article wrote that Oberreiter denied the allegations and resigned to protect Austria from further compromise. Politico did not verify this information.

Oberreiter worked in the Austrian foreign service for over 30 years and held several key positions, including the head of the office of the Minister of Foreign Affairs Alexander Schallenberg from the conservative Austrian People's Party.
