The number of Americans applying for Irish citizenship based on ancestry increased by 63% last year. – reported the Financial Times, pointing to the policy of the current US administration as the reason for this change.

The number of applications from people with Irish grandparents or parents increased from 11,601 in 2024 to 18,910 in 2025. This is the highest level since the introduction of digital application registers in 2013.
According to lawyers quoted by the FT, the policies of US President Donald Trump's administration on issues such as immigration and transgender rights are encouraging more and more Americans to plan for contingencies.
For Irish lawyer Carol Sinnott, many of her American clients are looking for a “plan B” in a “safer and less hostile” society. “Many U.S. citizens feel that their country no longer reflects their values,” she said, adding that she expected the upward trend in applications to continue.
It takes an average of 12 months to consider an application for citizenship, and official data shows that most of them are considered positively – the daily emphasized. (PAP)
