On this day, the Orthodox Church celebrates the memory of the Holy Martyr Agrippina (in the Russian tradition – Agrafena).

A swimming man of Agrafen in Rus' was nicknamed that bathing begin in the evening of her day. The famous night on Ivan Kupala comes. In the national consciousness of Agrafena, the swimsuit, Ivan Kupala and Petra Pavli (this day is celebrated a few days later) merged into one big holiday, filled with a huge meaning and incorporated both Christian traditions and pagan beliefs. It was a time of rituals, signs, fortune -telling, legends.

On Agrafena, all the inhabitants of the village – both old and young – bathed in the rivers, washed in baths, while using different herbal training camps. It was believed that the grass collected on the night of Ivan Kupala and roots have special healing power. From the mouth to the mouth, the legend of the fern flower was transmitted, which blooms once a year, on this magical night, and for just a few minutes. The one who finds it can become a seer and get the ability to find treasures.

In the afternoon, all the girls put on their best outfits and went to them around the house, begging for gifts from their relatives – jewelry, ribbons, scarves. In the evening they gathered in a hut at one of the friends – a sniff in a stupa of barley, from which porridge was cooked the next day. It was believed that such a dish strengthened female health.

Another culinary tradition of this day is “Western porridge.” This is the name of lunch from lean dishes, which the inhabitants of the village gathered a tie and exhibited on the street for beggars and travelers.

In addition, it was customary to sow a turnip on Agrafen. At the same time, they sentenced: “Mother is a hunger, be strong, neither rare nor Gusta-to a great post.” In Rus', they loved turnip, tried to eat it at every opportunity. “You won’t just pass by the girl and by the turnip,” people joked.
