Day of Habakkuk

On this day, the memory of the prophet Habakkuk is celebrated – the eighth of the twelve minor prophets. The book of prophecies of Habakkuk is known, which consists of three parts.

In Rus', it was customary to pray to the prophet Habakkuk for sound sleep, to ward off night-lights (evil spirits that frighten children at night) from the hut, and to read conspiracies against insomnia.

On Habakkuk they observed signs of the weather. Thus, heavy snow on this day promised a rich harvest of herbs in the summer. Good owners knew: large snows, melting in the spring, will water the earth, and it will turn green.
