Who is Alexandru Machidon, the candidate for the position of head of the General Prosecutor's Office of the Republic of Moldova

Alexandru Machidon was appointed candidate for the position of interim general prosecutor by the members of the Superior Council of the Prosecutor's Office, a position that became vacant after Ion Munteanu resigned after winning the competition for the position of judge at the Supreme Court of Justice.

In the last year, Alexandru Machidon has held the position of interim deputy chief of the Prosecutor's Office for Combating Organized Crime and Special Cases (PCCOCS). Between May 2023 – June 2024, he worked as interim chief of the Orhei district prosecutor, and was previously deputy chief of the Criuleni District Prosecutor's Office. He started his career as a prosecutor in 2011.
The candidate's wealth
He indicated an annual salary of about 406,637 Moldovan lei, the equivalent of about 105,000 Romanian lei. He also reported in the declaration of wealth for 2024 that he received 3,200 euros following an event within the family.
Prosecutor Alexandru Machidon owns an apartment with an area of 65.6 square meters, valued at 45,000 euros, as well as a BMW car, worth 26,000 euros.
He was appointed as an interim general prosecutor with the vote of the members of the Superior Council of Prosecutors (CSP), during the meeting on May 28. In total, two people have applied for this position, including the deputy chief of the Anticorruption Prosecutor's Office (PA), Octavian Iachimovschi.
Its arguments
Alexandru Machidon said that he has long wanted to reach the management of the General Prosecutor's Office.
“Any student who chooses to attend the Faculty of Law, then the National Institute of Justice (INJ), and decides to profess later, dreams of becoming a prosecutor General. I consider that I have all the necessary skills to exercise the interim position of Attorney General, taking into account the activity that I carried out in important territorial prosecutors in the country”, said Alexandru Machidon.
Subsequently, the CSP members are going to submit its candidacy to the President of the Republic of Moldova, Maia Sandu, for the appointment of Machidon as interim prosecutor.

The General Prosecutor's Office of the Republic of Moldova remained without leadership after Ion Munteanu resigned to hold the position of magistrate within the Supreme Court of Justice (CSJ), taking the oath at the meeting of the Superior Council of Magistracy (CSM) on May 27.
Ion Munteanu gave up the position of Attorney General after exercising only one year of the mandate of seven years.
