European leaders consider the possibility of acquiring weapons for Ukraine from the USA – Bloomberg

Europe has neither weapons, nor capacities for its production in sufficient volume, but it becomes clear that the United States will not supply it anymore, the agency writes. It is noted that the White House also rejected Europe's calls to continue pressure on the illegitimate president of the aggressor country Vladimir Putin to force him to agree with the immediate cessation of fire by strengthening sanctions.

Instead, the Kremlin, it seems, delaying the peaceful negotiations that he promised to the US President Donald Trump, preparing for the summer offensive, was told by persons familiar with this issue.

According to media sources, American weapons purchased by Europe would help Ukraine restrain the advance of Russia and could exert new pressure in Putin, forcing it to take the end of fire seriously. It will also help Ukraine if Europeans can convince Trump and continue to provide intelligence data to Ukraine, Media notes.

The Vice President of the Carnegie Foundation for the International World Andrew Weiss said that he still does not understand how bad it will be if the United States leave, leaving at the same time the opportunity for Europe or Ukraine to buy American weapons and allowing the exchange of US intelligence and Ukraine. According to him, “this is not the perfect result” and “not optimal”, but this is “not the worst scenario that many of us were worried about.”

Such a scenario will make Trump choose between two competing desires: his desire to avoid hostility with Putin and his desire to attract more money for the United States by selling expensive defense equipment, the article says.

Experts believe that the supply of weapons to Ukraine, approved and funded by the US exprauditor Joe Biden, can end this summer, and that Europe will be difficult to produce enough weapons to make up for the gap. Putin will try to use this dynamics, Media notes.

The armament of Ukraine with American -made weapons, acquired or donated, is the only way to convince Putin to stop the war, said Charles Kupchans, senior researcher at the Council of International Relations. According to him, an agreement on minerals, signed with Ukraine, gives the president the opportunity to apply to Congress with a request for additional financing for Ukraine and argue that this is a contribution to the general investment fund, and not the burden for US taxpayers.

Kupchans added that Trump “understands that if he throws Ukraine under the bus, and Russia will ensure the surrender of Ukraine, this will be a striking political defeat” for the American leader.

Context

After the start of full -scale Russian aggression in February 2022, Ukraine receives help from Western countries, including military and financial.

The US administration provided Ukraine with resources for protection from Russia for a year ahead, on December 17, 2024, at that time, the speaker of the State Department Matthew Miller.

On March 14, the President of Ukraine Vladimir Zelensky said that in conversations with Trump he offered to buy a Patriot system. On the same day, Trump reacted to the words of the Ukrainian president: “Zelensky always wants to buy missiles. Listen when you start a war, you should know that you can win it. Yes? You can’t start a war against someone who is 20 times more than you, and then hope that people will give you rockets,” the American leader noted.

On April 19, The Washington Post wrote that the increasing number of European countries considers the model for pouring money into the Ukrainian defense industry instead of transferring weapons.

In May, the Commander of the Central Command of the United States in 2008-2010, Director of the CIA in 2011-2012 David Petreus in an interview with a journalist, founder of the Gordon Internet publication Dmitry Gordon said that the supply of weapons from the United States will last yet at least four to six months.
