Sebastiao Salgado is dead. The outstanding photographer was 81 years old


“Sebastiao was more than one of the best photographers of our time. His lens revealed the world and its contradictions, and his life – the power to change” – we read in the institute's communiqué.

During 50 years of professional activity, Salgado visited over 120 countries, traversing, among others South America, Africa and Europe. His life and creativity were presented in the documentary film “Salt of the Earth” from 2014, directed by Wim Wenders and his son Juliano Ribeiro Salgado.

Black and white Salgado photographs were characterized by a high emotional saturation. Poor communities have always belonged to the main topics of his work – emphasized the AP agency.

Salgado has won numerous photographic awards. He was an honorary member of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences and the French Academy of Fine Arts.

The photographer died in Paris, where he lived for many years. The cause of death has not yet been made public, but Salgado had health problems related to malaria, which he formed in the 1990s, “Folha de Sao Paulo” said.
