The amount offered and the possible plane ticket for those who volunteer would cost less than a forced deportation. Currently the average cost of arresting, restraining and expeling an illegally in the US is about $ 17,000, notes Reuters.

The Trump administration will provide a $ 1,000 incentive and support for migrants who choose to voluntarily return to the country of origin, the US Department for Internal Security (DHS) announced on Monday.

President Donald Trump has taken over the mandate in January promising the deportation of millions, but so far he has registered less expense than his predecessor, Joe Biden. According to DHS, from January 20, the Trump administration deported 152,000 people, below the level of 195,000 expelled during February-April 2024, under the Biden Administration.

In order to encourage voluntary departures, the Trump administration threatened with great fines, withdrew the legal status of migrants and sent people to known detention centers in Guantanamo Bay and El Salvador.

“If you are illegally in this country, self-repair is the best, safe and effective way to leave the United States and avoid arrest,” said the Secretary for Internal Security, Kristi Noem.

In March, the administration launched the CBP Home application, a rebranded version of the CBP One, previously used by the Biden Administration to allow legal migration. The new version facilitates the US voluntary departure process.

Donald Trump announced in April the stimulants for migrants and suggested that some of them could return legally to the country. “If there are good people, if we want to receive them back, we will collaborate with them to bring them back,” Trump said.

DHS said on Monday that those who choose to volunteer “could contribute to” the possibility of returning legally to the US, but did not provide details about a concrete mechanism in this regard.
