David Beckham received the title of knight from King Charles III, in the margin of the British monarch. The former footballer became a SIR, and his wife, Victoria Beckham, a fashion designer and former member of Spice Girls, will bear the name Lady Beckham, notes News.ro.

Former captain of the English football team, aged 50, was appointed officer of the Order of the British Empire (OBE) in 2003.

He played 115 times for his country, as well as for Manchester United, Real Madrid, Galaxy, Paris St-Germain and AC Milan, withdrawing in 2013.

“Growing up in East London, with parents and grandparents who were so patriotic and proud to be British, I could never imagine that I would receive such a truly humiliating honor,” Beckham said.

“It will take a bit to realize what is happening, but I am extremely proud and it is an emotional moment,” he said.

Beckham was nominated for the first time for the title of knight in 2011.

In 2017, several British newspapers published details of e-mails in which Beckham would have criticized the honorary system and the organizing committee.

A Beckham spokesman said at that time that the emails were “pirated”, “modified” and “private”.

Beckham has played a key role in organizing 2012 Olympic Games in London and is an ambassador to the 2005 Unicef ​​charity.

He also became an ambassador to the King's Foundation in 2024 – supporting King Charles's educational program and efforts to ensure that young people have a better understanding of nature.

“I was lucky to have the opportunity to represent the UK worldwide and work with incredible organizations that support the needy communities and inspire the next generation,” Beckham added.

“I am so lucky to be able to do the work I do and I am grateful to be recognized for the work that gives me so much fulfillment,” Beckham added.
