Every two and a half days, a man tried or killed a woman in Romania. How many murders and attempts were there last year

66 femicides took place in Romania last year. At least 69 other women were one step away from being killed by their partners, husbands, brothers-in-law or nephews, neighbors or strangers, according to the latest answers obtained by the Snoop.ro website from the Prosecutor's Office. In total, at least 135 cases

In the Femicide Map published in October 2025 by Snoop with data from the first 9 months, first 7 months (attempts) and 9 months (murders), a man attempted to kill a woman every 3 days. After data from the second half of the year, the average dropped to just over 2.5 days for an attempted or murder.

“There cannot be spontaneous conflict between intimate partners, there is a history,” says Ecaterina Balica, researcher at the Institute of Sociology of the Romanian Academy and ORAPO coordinator.

In 2026, there have already been 6 femicides. The majority in Iași, the county with the most attempts in 2025.

Femicide is the intentional killing of a woman or girl. Most often, femicides are committed by a man or his partner, as a result of feelings of hatred or as a result of structural gender inequalities.

In Romania, femicide is not recognized as a crime. Its recognition by law, in Parliament, is expected. For now, the project is in the committees of the Chamber of Deputies.

Last year, 66 women were killed: life partners, ex-partners, female relatives, neighbors, friends, strangers.

It is an informal count, made by NGOs and the press, as the Romanian state does not monitor the phenomenon of femicide. This number also includes assaults that took place in 2024, but turned into murders in 2025, after the death of the victim.

Buzau, the county with the most crimes

The most women were killed, in total, in Buzău county last year: five, followed by Prahova, Brăila, Bacău and Maramureș counties, with four. Constanța, Iasi and Neamț follow, with three.

The crimes are extremely violent. In Vulcan, Brașov county, in November, a man stabbed his partner several times with a knife. He has also been convicted in the past for attempted murder.

In the same month, in Râmnicu Sărat, Buzău county, a 45-year-old woman, a wheelchair user, was beaten continuously for a quarter of an hour by the two men she lived with because she did not tell them she needed the toilet. One of the aggressors was also convicted of murder.

Why aren't attempts always reported?

Attempted cases are not always reports of women going through such life-threatening assaults. Either because they are afraid, or because of shame, or because they don't trust the authorities to help them. So the number of cases that can be interpreted as attempted murder can actually be higher.

“They don't complain because (the victim, no) at some point feels guilty for having harmed the relationship,” explains clinical psychologist and psychotherapist Ana Cristina Predescu.
