A Christian man accused of blasphemy in the city of Jaranwala in eastern Pakistan will appeal against the death sentence pronounced by an anti -terrorist court, his lawyer, quoted by Reuters, announced on Saturday.
The 36 -year -old man was convicted of blasphemy following the accusations that he had desecrated the Holy Muslim book, the Koran, statements that fed the attacks on a Christian neighborhood in 2023, in which hundreds of houses and churches were burned and thousands of people were forced to leave their homes.
“We will appeal to the High Court against this verdict,” said his lawyer, Akmal Bhatti, for Reuters, referring to the verdict pronounced on Friday evening.
Blasphemy is punished by death in Pakistan. Nobody was executed by the state for this accusation, but many accused were linked by the revolted crowds.
On Friday, in the city of Karachi in the south of the country, a lot of 100-200 people killed a 47-year-old Ahmadi, owner of a car workshop.
Ahmădi are a minority group that has faced attacks in Pakistan, being considered heretical and accused of blasphemy by some Orthodox Muslims.
