The Trump administration continues the purification in the US Army. A navy vice -chair with leadership in NATO has been dismissed

American navy Vice -amiral Shoshana Chatfield, who holds a NATO leadership position, was dismissed on the background of an expansion purification of top officials orchestrated by the Trump administration, three sources for Reuters said on Monday.
The information was not immediately confirmed by Pentagon. However, the sources told Reuters that the Allies were notified that Chatfield was removed from his position.
Chatfield, US military representative at NATO Military Committee, is one of the few three-star women in the military navy and was the first woman to run the Naval War College, which he held by 2023.
Chatfield's dismissal is the latest that shook the Pentagon after General Timothy Haugh, the head of the National Security Agency and the US Cyber Command.
The head of the Pentagon, warning for allied countries
For the navy, the dismissal comes after the removal of another high -ranking officer, Admiral Lisa Franchetti, the first woman to become the head of the naval operations.
President Donald Trump's administration has adopted a cold attitude towards NATO, as well as to European allies, since taking over in January 2025.
The head of the Pentagon, Pete Hegseth, used his first journey to NATO in February to warn Europe not to treat the United States as a “sucker”, making them responsible for their defense.
It was not clear whether any official reason was given for the dismissal of Chatfield or if it was related to any political direction of the United States regarding the organization of the Northern Atlantic Treaty.
Critics from the Democratic Camp
Jack Reed, the most important democrat in the Senate Armed Services Commission, said that “the unjustified dismissal of the Deputy Chatfield is shameful” and criticized the Republicans because they did not rule against the dismissal of the senior military officials.
“The silence from my republican colleagues is deeply worrying … I can't understand how someone can stand with their hands while the president causes great damage to our army and nation,” Reed said in a statement.
A source told Reuters that the reason for Chatfield's removal could be related to the Pentagon's repression on initiatives in terms of diversity, equity and inclusion.
In a recent interview with Harvard magazine, Chatfield seemed to come for a while when the qualifications of the army women were no longer suspicious.
The article cited an example in which Chatfield, a helicopter pilot, drove a Hawk's MH-60S helicopter squad, used by American naval forces in 2005-2006.
“An average sailor … asked:” Lady, you can pilot one of these helicopters? And I said and said, “Yes, it is actually a prerequisite for this job!”, Said the American Vice -Adamarar, adding that at that time they wore the marks that he was a naval aviator.
Wave of dismissions in the American army
Hegseth has made the elimination of diversity and inclusion priority priority, claiming that they cause divisions.
He also put an end to events such as “the Moon of the History of Blacks” and “The Moon of Women's History”, transmitting guidance to the American army that “the efforts to divide the forces – to put a group before another – erode the camaraderie and threaten the execution of the mission”.
In recent weeks, the president of the head of the General Staff, General CQ Brown, as well as other admirals, generals and members of the Security personnel have also been fired.
Many current and former government officials have said that they are afraid that any national security official could be suspected of lack of loyalty by Trump's restricted circle because of the connections perceived with those who have fallen into disgrace or because they have played key roles in the Biden administration.
Military officials in uniform should be loyal to the US Constitution and independent of any party or political movement, notes Reuters.
