Only two Polish airports with a decrease in passengers in 2024

Warsaw-Modlin and Olsztyn-Mazury are the only two airports in Poland, which in 2024 noted a decrease in the number of passengers-according to the data of the Civil Aviation Office. The largest increase took place at the Warsaw Chopin Airport, which last year celebrated almost 2.8 million people more than a year earlier.


“The year 2024 was a record for many Polish airports. Chopin Airport in Warsaw for the first time in its history served more than 20 million passengers, achieving the result of almost 21.3 million. International Airport named after John Paul II Kraków-Balice exceeded the threshold of 10 million passengers with a result of 11.1 million, while the Rzeszów-Jasionka airport exceeded 1 million passengers in civil traffic with the result Almost 1.1 million after the end of the year, “said the Civil Aviation Office in the summary of the aviation market results in 2024.
ULC pointed out that the largest numerical increase in passengers compared to 2023 was recorded by the Warsaw Chopin airport. In 2024, it celebrated almost 2.8 million passengers more than a year earlier (15.1 % more). Next was the Kraków-Balice and Poznań-Ławica airport-increases by 1.7 million (17.8 percent) and 820.3 thousand respectively. passengers (29.5 percent). Relaced 2019, the highest increases were recorded by the Kraków-Balice, Chopin and Katowice-Pyrzowice airports-increases by 2.7 million, 2.4 million and 1.5 million passengers, respectively.
As also results from the ULC data, in 2024 the highest percentage increase in the number of passengers was recorded by the Zielona Góra-Babimost airport. In 2024, the airport celebrated 82,000 467 passengers – it is 54.1 percent (28 thousand 944 passengers) more than in 2023.
A decrease in the number of passengers only occurred in the case of two airports in Poland-Warsaw-Modlin and Olsztyn-Mazury. In 2024, the port in 2024 recorded 2 million 697 thousand. 575 passengers, which means a decrease from 3 million 399 thousand. 650 people in 2023 – by 20.7 percent r/r. In 2024, the Olsztyn-Mazury airport celebrated 68,000 661 travelers, in 2023. It was 140 thousand. 444 people – a decrease by 51.1 percent r/r.
As ULC explained, the decline in Modlin is related to the reduction of the number of places offered by Ryanair. In the case of the Podolsztyn port, the reason is the suspension of flights by Wizz Air and the reduction of Ryanair's offering. The office added that compared to 2019, in addition to the ports of Olsztyn-Mazury and Warsaw-Modlin-it also occurred in the case of Szczecin-Goleniów and Bydgoszcz ports.
The remaining Polish airports mostly recorded in 2024, several percent or higher increases. Traffic at the port of Gdańsk increased by 13.6 percent. yard, in Katowice by 13.8 percent growth, in Wrocław by 15.1 percent, in Rzeszów by 17.1 percent, in Łódź by 20.8 percent, and in Radom by 7.5 percent. Less increases were recorded at airports in Lublin, Szczecin and Bydgoszcz – increases by 6.9 percent, respectively, 0.3 percent and 0.4 percent
ULC pointed out that comparing the fourth quarter of 2024 and 2023, the largest numerical increases among the airports were achieved by the Chopin Airport in Warsaw (by 696.2 thousand passengers), Kraków-Balice Airport (by 443,000) and Gdańsk Airport (at 194.3 thousand). The declines in the fourth quarter of 2024, relative to the same period, occurred a year earlier in the case of Warsaw-Modlin airports (decrease by 38.2 percent), Olsztyn-Mazury (by 64.5 percent), Bydgoszcz (by 14.3 percent) and Warsaw-Radom (about 35.2 percent). It was explained that in Bydgoszcz the decrease was related to the reduction of the offer by Ryanair, and in Radom the reason was mainly to reduce the offer by PLL LOT. ULC added that the Ports Warsaw-Modlin, Olsztyn-Mazury, Szczecin-Goleniów, Bydgoszcz and Lublin also recorded declines relative to the fourth quarter of 2019.
Among the air carriers, the most passengers in the international regular movement in 2024 were served by Ryanair. The number of passengers served in Polish airports by this line was less than 17 million in 2024, which is an increase of 1.9 million compared to 2023. Wizz Air came second with a result of 11.5 million passengers in 2024, which is an increase of 935.2 thousand. and LOT PLL with a result of 7.7 million and an increase of 468.6 thous. Lufthansa (approx. 2.1 million), Enter Air (about 1.2 million) and KLM (about 1 million people) were in further places.
In the case of charter traffic in international traffic in 2024, the most passengers were served by Enter Air – 2.6 million people, by 576 thousand. More than in 2023, there was Buzz (1.3 million people, an increase of 7.1 thousand) and LOT Polish Airlines (1.3 million travelers, an increase of 208.4 thousand).
ULC also informed that in 2024 Polish airports in regular international and national traffic served a total of 50 million passengers – it is an increase of 10.8 percent. Relaced by 2023, most people traveled from Poland to Great Britain (7.8 million passengers), Italy (5 million) and Spain (4.3 million). In turn, the greatest increases compared to 2023 were recorded in the case of Spain (an increase of 1.3 million passengers), Italy (by 1.1 million) and Denmark (by 473,000).
In international charter traffic, airports in Poland served almost 9.2 million passengers, which is an increase of 29.4 percent. r/r. Most people traveled to Turkey – 2.8 million passengers, an increase of 501.6 thous. r/r. Greece was further with the result of 1.6 million travelers and an increase of 271,000) and Egypt – 1.6 million passengers, an increase of 529.4 thousand. people.
