The Supreme Court decided that only the dogs that behave aggressively or are infected with rabies will go to the shelters. The judges also decided that the decision on how to treat stray dogs will be extended to the entire India, and uniform guidelines in this matter are to be formulated in the near future.

The Friday ruling goes back to the decision of August 11, according to which the Indian Supreme Court ordered to catch stray dogs from Delhi streets and place them in shelters. It was justified with a rapidly growing number of rabies, especially among children. The court referred to statistics, according to which almost 430,000 were reported in the whole country in January this year. cases of biting by dogs, which accounted for over 11.5 percent. the total number of such events throughout 2024.

The decision of the Supreme Court met with criticism of many organizations, including animal lovers, who argued that the city has no infrastructure or is able to provide dogs with adequate medical care. An appeal was lodged against this decision, and protests were organized against the verdict during which there were scuffles with policemen.

It is estimated that in India lives from 52.5 to even 70 million stray dogs, and in Delhi itself there are from 500,000 to a million. About 210 million from a total number of nearly 1.5 billion inhabitants of India are Muslims, for whom in the vast majority dogs are unclean animals. (PAP)
