The way they are tested, evaluated and noted the students in Romania will change in a not very distant future. The process involves several stages, and one of them is the establishment and implementation of new evaluation standards. Specifically, the exact standards will help the teachers to know exactly what expectations they need to have from the students and evaluate them objectively, depending on their progress, the degree to which they master the raw material and the skills accumulated. This eliminates the teacher's subjectivism, the differences in scoring between schools and discrimination.

The realization of the national assessment standards is done with the help of two international experts, Prof. Dr. Mark Reckase (professor at Michigan State University and former president of the National Council on Education) and Dr. Eduardo Cascallar (professor at Ku Leuven, Belgium). The latter, who was in Romania last week, gave us an interview in which he explained to us why the current scoring and evaluation practices are not effective and what will change with the implementation of the new standards (according to a recent statement made by the Minister of Education, in January 2026 the new standards will be completed for the primary education).

Eduardo Cascallar is a teacher and researcher in the US and Europe, has developed the methodologies used in the national tests of several countries and has provided consultancy for international bodies such as OECD, UNESCO and Ministries of Education in several states.

Prof. Dr. Eduardo Cascallar: Evaluation standards offer benefits for both the student and the educational system. They provide higher test validity, better reliability (ie test accuracy) and allow wider coverage to avoid discrimination or incorrect practices. In many ways, these standards respond to all the requirements of a quality evaluation.

How will the way children will be evaluated in class? What immediate and long -term benefits can students and teachers expect?

Prof. Dr. Eduardo Cascallar: The standards do not directly influence how you choose, as a teacher, to evaluate, but I would rather say that, regardless of the evaluation method, the standards offer a clear direction regarding the levels to be reached, in a correct and fair way. The benefits, therefore, consist of improving the quality of testing. A better test will be able to measure students' skills more correctly and without subjectivism.
