The leader of the UDMR does not exclude the transition to the opposition: “I am not afraid of such a thing”

Kelemen Hunor reiterated on Friday that the “first option” for the UDMR is to rebuild the coalition, but he did not rule out a possible transition of the Union into the opposition.

He declared, after Friday's meeting in Cluj-Napoca of the Council of Union Representatives (CRU), that the UDMR wants to be part of a “government that will be able to put order in the country, to provide good solutions to the country's problems”.

“In the next period – I can't promise you today – that the UDMR in 2026, in the coming months, will be able to participate in the government, maybe we will enter the opposition. I am not afraid of that, I think that for construction, the opposition can be a new chance. But we want to be part of a government that is able to put order in the country, to give good solutions to the country's problems”, said Kelemen Hunor, quoted by Agerpres.

The first option, reiterated Kelemen Hunor, is to restore the PSD + PNL + USR + UDMR coalition.

“If we can't find a solution that would allow us to have a majority or, in the worst case, but that would be the third, fourth stage, a minority government, but with transparent support, without AUR, then, of course, there is the possibility of remaining in the opposition,” the UDMR leader also declared.

At the beginning of next week, President Nicușor Dan called for consultations with the parliamentary parties for the formation of the new Government. The discussions will start with the PSD, from 9 o'clock. Today, the head of state stated that he will not make an announcement on Monday or Tuesday about the future candidate for the position of prime minister.

Another option excluded by the UDMR leader

He ruled out the scenario of a technocratic government with a technocratic prime minister and ministers from PSD and UDMR.

“There is no such option. There is only one option in our heads, and this is the desired one, if we can achieve it, to restore the coalition. PSD-UDMR is a minority government. As you know, PNL does not support such a government, that means you have to go to AUR and the other formations, and from our point of view, it does not work”, said Kelemen Hunor.
