Sighisoara, the last inhabited medieval citadel in Europe, marks the beginning of summer with the “Carnival in the citadel” festival. Access is free – May 28 – June 1, 2026

The Medieval Citadel of Sighişoara, the last permanently inhabited one in Europe, is preparing to open its doors to thousands of tourists, invited to participate in the first edition of the “Carnival in the citadel” festival – an event that will bring color, emotion and vibrant energy to the heart of the city. For five days, between May 28 and June 1, the cobbled streets of the medieval center will acquire a special charm, through live music concerts, street animation, magic, shows and activities for all ages.
“Carnival in the city” is an event organized by the Association of Local Entrepreneurs from Sighișoara, with the support of the Sighișoara City Hall and the Mures County Council, with the intention of offering tourists and local communities the opportunity to enjoy recreational activities in a memorable atmosphere.
Why you should not miss the “Carnival in the citadel”
Sighişoara Citadel is a place with a special energy, but during the Carnival the streets come alive, the atmosphere becomes festive, and every day brings artistic moments, shows and different activities, all with free access.
For five days, the narrow streets of the other citadel will be enlivened by dance performances, magic workshops, street animation shows and concerts by well-known bands and artists.
At the same time, the organizers have prepared an area exclusively for children – “Kids Land” – where the little ones will have permanent access, not only from June 1, to creative workshops, inflatable slides, obstacle courses and thematic shows.

Evenings with live music and diverse rhythms, from alternative rock to modern sounds
At the first edition of “Carnival in the city”, the heart of Sighisoara also comes alive through the energy of live music concerts, which completely change the atmosphere of the city.
Among those who set the tone for the memorable evenings are artists and bands from various musical fields, from alternative rock and pop-rock to electronic music and contemporary fusions, such as Robin and the Backstabbers, Snails, Nicolae Gheza & Guest, Bere Gratis and NIDAL.
Thus, “Carnival in the city” becomes a dynamic and diverse musical show, where live energy, well-known choruses and contemporary sounds intertwine into a complete experience for the audience, turning every evening into an authentic festival moment.
Free event for children and adults
“Carnival in the citadel” is another event through which we want to show the whole world the spirit of medieval and current Sighisoara, between history and the effervescence of the present. We want visitors to fondly remember the experience of a city that lives differently, through the atmosphere and memorable moments, through the people you meet here and through the energy you feel. And on this occasion, we set out to celebrate the city's tradition and people, art and history alike, music and outdoor experiences over five eventful days for all ages.” said Dumitru Todiriță, president of the Association of Local Entrepreneurs from Sighisoara.
All activities within the “Carnival in the citadel” festival are free of charge. All you have to do is enter the festival mood and embrace the joy and zest for life in Vlad Tepeş's Citadel, in the heart of Transylvania.
More details about the program and the activities carried out between May 28 and June 1 are available on the event's Facebook page.
