Hypatius the Wonderworker

Saint Hypatius, whose memory is revered on this day, was the bishop of the city of Gangra in Asia Minor. In 325, he participated in the Council of Nicaea, which established the basic dogmas of Christianity.

In Rus', Hypatius was revered as the resolver of childlessness. They prayed to him for the addition of a family and for deliverance from infertility. They believed that he could stop the bleeding of a woman in labor and increase mother's milk. They also asked Hypatius for the exorcism of demons and protection from the brownies, who are swaggering and rioting on this day.

In some regions this holiday was called Ognishche. Ognishchanka – a woman born on this day – was supposed to take the smoldering coals to the field and make a fire there. Peasants carried plows and harrows through it so that they worked properly.
