Meta is planning mass layoffs. About 10 percent employees will lose their jobs in May
The technology giant intends to part with approximately 10 percent. its global staff – nearly 7.8 thousand. people. The reductions will also include the closure of 6,000 vacancies. The decision is scheduled to enter into force on May 20.
In an official note sent to employees, Human Resources Director Janella Gale emphasized that the purpose of the layoffs is to “manage the company more efficiently” and balance growing investments, including: in the development of artificial intelligence. Although Meta did not specify what investments it is about, it is known that the company devotes huge funds to the development of AI, data center infrastructure and recruitment of specialists.
Employees affected by the layoffs will receive the equivalent of at least 16 weeks of basic pay plus two additional weeks for each year of service. Meta will also pay for their health insurance for the next 18 months. Severance packages for non-US employees are to be adjusted to local regulations.
Employees will be informed about the decision by e-mail on May 20 – both to their work and private mailboxes.

“A necessary decision.” Meta comments on layoffs
Meta does not comment further on the matter. The announcement emphasized that although the decision was difficult, it was necessary in the company's current situation. — This is not an easy choice and means saying goodbye to people who have made a significant contribution to Meta – wrote Janella Gale.
The company also announces support for dismissed employees – both in looking for a new job and in immigration matters. Details of the process will be provided in subsequent communications before May 20.
This is another round of layoffs at Meta – in March, the company already lost several hundred people. Currently, Meta employs over 78,000. people all over the world.
