A commission at the top of the Vatican has warned the 1.4 billion Catholic faithful against resorting to cosmetic surgery, which can lead to the appearance of a “body cult” and to an unrealistic search for a perfect silhouette, reports the international press agency, quoted by Agerpres.
“The progress recorded in aesthetic surgery offers tools that significantly change the relationship of man with his own corporeality”, it is stated in the text approved by Pope Leo XIV
The document continues on the same note:
“But after this comes the widespread installation of a 'body cult', which tends to lead to a frantic search for the perfect figure, always in shape, young and beautiful,”
According to the Catholic Church, the human body is created in the image of God. Although the Church does not prohibit cosmetic surgery, it states that the Catholic faithful should not resort to such procedures just to satisfy their vanity.

The warning was included in a document issued by the Vatican's International Theological Commission, which advises the pope on doctrinal issues facing the Catholic Church.
The aforementioned commission warned against cosmetic surgery, which is part of a long reflection on procedures that use technology to make humanity advance.
The commission also warned against a future in which artificial intelligence “risks getting out of control human reason” and in which people could choose to have mechanical implants to become “cyborg”-like.
Aesthetic surgery can lead to an attitude based on the desire to change the body “depending on the tastes of the moment“, warned the same document.
“A curious situation arises: the ideal body is exalted … while the real body is not really loved, because it is a source of limitations, fatigue, aging”it is stated in the text of the above-mentioned commission.
