Metz overcame bad luck on Saturday and qualified for the Champions League final for the first time. He eliminated CSM Bucharest in the semifinals, score 32-27. An eventual triumph for the band trained by Emmanuel Mayonnade it would be historic for French handball. No team from the Hexagon has ever lifted the trophy!
Gyor had a much tougher match in the semi-finals. He returned Brest only at the end, victory 31-30. The band now trained by Per Johansson has a different caliber in the competition. It has won the previous two editions, and a possible positive result today would take it to second place all-time, behind Spartak Kiev, the team that dominated handball in the 1970s and 1980s.
Gyor still has an advantage today. The MVM Dome in Budapest is full, the most fans being, obviously, Hungarians.
