What are North Korea's goals in terms of military potential?

Kim Yo Jong warned that any action that threatens North Korea's security could lead to “dire consequences.”

The exercises test military readiness

The Freedom Shield maneuvers are two of the most important annual headquarters exercises conducted jointly by the armed forces of the United States and South Korea. They are largely computer simulations and are used to check the operational capabilities of both armies in various conflict scenarios.

The exercise is also accompanied by a field training program called Warrior Shield.

Washington and Seoul emphasize that the maneuvers are of a defensive nature and are part of preparation for possible threats in the region.

North Korea announces strengthening its military potential

In her statement, Kim Yo Jong also referred to the nuclear program developed by North Korea. She announced further strengthening of the country's military potential, which – according to the authorities in Pyongyang – will be an effective means of deterrence.

For years, North Korean authorities have described joint U.S.-South Korean military exercises as preparations for an invasion. In the past, they often used them as an excuse for demonstrations of force, including missile tests.

Relations between North Korea and the United States and South Korea have remained frozen for several years. The country's leader Kim Jong Un is increasingly presenting his foreign policy as part of a new Cold War.

Pyongyang is deepening cooperation with Russia and China, and maintaining relations with Iran. Both North Korea and Iran are among the few countries that supported Russia's invasion of Ukraine. Both countries are also accused by the West of supplying military equipment to Moscow.
