On this day, Orthodox Christians remember Metropolitan Alexy, a statesman and diplomat of the 14th century. In church texts he is called the Metropolitan of Moscow and All Russia, a miracle worker.
In Rus' they said that snow begins to melt on Alexy (Alexey), so fishing is good.
Accordingly, fish dishes were prepared on this day. The main one was pies.
Researchers of Russian cuisine write that their name comes from the word “stretch”. Pies were served with fish broth, and during meals it was sometimes poured directly into the pie; To make this more convenient, a hole was left on top of the pie, which had to be stretched.
Also on Alexei’s day, sowing seeds were taken out into the cold – it was believed that this way they would give a better harvest. They did the same with yarn, and they said: “If you freeze the yarn after Vlasius (his day was celebrated the day before), you will have money for Maslenitsa.” It was believed that frozen threads would be smoother.
