Firefighters had a timed intervention on the lake in the IOR Park in the Capital on Friday evening. They were called to the rescue of a 24-year-old man who fell into the frozen lake while trying to rescue a dog in the water. Both the young man and the quadruped were pulled from the water safely.
“This evening, the firefighters of the Chemists' Detachment intervened to save a young man who fell into a frozen lake, while trying to save a dog that ended up in the water. Low temperatures and fragile ice turned the act of altruism into an extremely dangerous situation,” reads a post on Facebook by the Bucharest-Ilfov Emergency Situations Inspectorate (ISU).
According to the cited source, the intervention was against the clock.
“Access with the fire truck to the vicinity of the place where the event occurred could not be achieved, so the firefighters ran to the area indicated by the witnesses. A saving solution was the use of a small, easy-to-maneuver boat, identified by a witness in a recreational boat warehouse. The decision made the difference, and the person was quickly and safely extracted, and then taken over by the medical crews,” report the ISU representatives.
Danger on the lakes. ISU warning
According to the ISU, the rescue intervention had “a happy ending for both protagonists, both the 24-year-old and the dog pulled from the water by our divers”.
ISU representatives remind that “ice formed on lakes, rivers or ponds is NOT safe, regardless of the apparent thickness. In such situations, do not attempt rescue on your own – call 112 immediately and leave the intervention to rescue teams.”
