– I think it would be very unwise – said Bessent, when asked by journalists on the occasion of the World Economic Forum in Davos about possible retaliatory measures.

He called on Europe not to cast doubt on US President Donald Trump's intentions regarding Greenland. – I was traveling, so I haven't been in contact (with European officials), but I have talked to President Trump and clearly there is a lot to sort out. I think everyone should take the president's word for it, he said.

Bessent called a “journalistic duck” the report that Trump's actions towards Greenland were related to his failure to receive the Nobel Peace Prize last year.

93 billion euros of retaliation. The EU is preparing a “nuclear” response to Trump's tariffs

The European Union is in talks to impose tariffs worth EUR 93 billion on American goods if US President Donald Trump imposes 10 percent tariffs on European countries, Bloomberg reported on Monday. Trump has threatened to introduce these measures if no agreement is reached in the Greenland dispute.

On Saturday, Trump threatened to impose tariffs on goods from eight NATO member countries – Denmark, Norway, Sweden, France, Germany, the Netherlands, Finland and the United Kingdom – that have sent small groups of troops to the autonomous Danish territory to take part in military exercises. This threat prompted the European Union to consider imposing tariffs on US goods worth EUR 93 billion. (PAP)
