According to “Kommersant”, the current contract for the supply of Russian energy to China is valid until 2037. However, in recent years, exports have been losing importance. Since 2023, supplies have been systematically reduced due to the growing demand for energy in the Russian Far Eastern energy network. In parallel, prices rose and became closer each month until it was no longer profitable for China to maintain them.

Russian-Chinese talks on energy supplies
The Russian energy supplier, InterRAO, which delivers to China, confirmed that talks are ongoing. The company assured that neither party was considering terminating the contract.
“Currently, the parties are actively exploring electricity trading opportunities,” InterRAO said in a statement. It was also noted that the company remains in constant contact with Chinese partners and that the parties are “actively looking for commercial opportunities.”
The Chinese side contacted by Reuters for comment did not send any response.

The Russian Ministry of Energy reports that meeting the growing demand for electricity in the Far East remains a priority. At the same time, it was emphasized that exports to China may be resumed if Beijing submits an appropriate application and satisfactory terms of cooperation are negotiated.
Declining energy exports to China
InterRAO exports electricity to China on the basis of a long-term contract signed in 2012. The contract assumes the supply of 100 billion kilowatt hours over 25 years. Power is transmitted via international power lines in the Far East, which can deliver up to 7 billion kilowatt hours per year.
However, since a record level of exports in 2022 of 4.6 billion kilowatt hours, supplies have been steadily decreasing. In 2023, exports dropped to 3.1 billion kilowatt hours, and in 2024 – to 0.9 billion kilowatt hours.

In 2025, the situation worsened even more, with only 0.3 billion kilowatt-hours delivered in the first nine months.
