MEP Diana Șoșoacă, president of the SOS Romania formation, announced that she had a “direct conversation with prominent members of the legitimate power in Venezuela” on Sunday and says that the manner in which Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro was removed from power is “strikingly” reminiscent of the events of December 1989 in Romania, when the Ceaușescus were arrested.
According to a statement published on Facebook on Monday, Diana Iovanovici-Soșoacă states that she had “a direct online conversation with prominent members of the legitimate power in Venezuela, statesmen with whom she has a consolidated relationship since January 2025, when she participated in the inauguration ceremony of President Nicolas Maduro. In this diplomatic dialogue, the serious consequences of the recent events in Venezuela and the implications on the sovereignty of states in relation to external aggressions were analyzed.”
“The history of Venezuela is disturbingly similar to the history of Romania, Venezuela being the country with the largest oil reserves in the world. The interest of the great powers is obvious”, the MEP also states, according to which “today we see the same scenario again”.
“The brutal way in which the Maduro presidential couple was removed is strikingly reminiscent of the way the Ceaușescus were removed. Romania experienced this trauma 36 years ago. Today, Venezuela is going through the same type of geopolitical experiment. (…) Such actions represent a serious violation of international law and the UN Charter. Venezuela is under attack today. Tomorrow it can be anyone. Romania is no longer allowed to remain an economic and political colony,” concluded the leader of SOS Romania.
Message from AUR
In a press release published on Monday, the AUR said that Romania's relationship with the USA is “essential” for national sovereignty, but also that “any major decision adopted by Bucharest must first be consulted with Washington”.
Thus, the party led by George Simion asked the Presidency, the Government and the Parliament to declare 2026 as the “Year of America in Romania”, in the context in which the USA is celebrating its 250th anniversary.
AUR wants 2026 to be the “Year of America in Romania” and calls Trump “the most important global political leader”
AUR claims that the political, strategic and economic decisions of Donald Trump had a direct impact on “the defense of democratic values in an increasingly unstable international context”.
The message came two days after Nicolas Maduro, the 63-year-old president of Venezuela, was captured in a US special forces operation.
“Under the leadership of President Donald Trump, considered in 2026 the most important political leader at the global level, the American influence was felt both on the international stage and in the relationship with the European Union,” reads the press release published by AUR, through which the political formation proposes that 2026 be declared “The Year of America in Romania”.
For his part, Călin Georgescu, the former candidate for the November 2024 presidential elections, said on Monday that American President Donald Trump “is a man of action, who does not admit the theft of elections” and, after Venezuela, he could also intervene in Europe.
The reaction of the Romanian authorities
Romania's position
Diplomacy from Bucharest, through the voice of the foreign minister, Oana Țoiu, appreciated the American intervention in Venezuela.
Instead, President Nicușor Dan, who as head of state represents the Romanian state at the international level, did not have any public reaction regarding the operation to capture Nicolas Maduro.
Prime Minister Ilie Bolojan declared, on Saturday evening, that until that moment he had not discussed the situation in Venezuela with the head of state, but that he was following what was happening in this country, whose leadership Romania did not recognize, so our country does not have a consulate in Caracas. He added that Romania will be in line with the position of the European Union.
