Trump announces that the US has “ended the war with Iran”. However, Tehran remains cautious: “No final decision has been made”

US President Donald Trump said overnight that the United States had “ended the war” with Iran, shortly after announcing that the two sides had agreed to a “very firm memorandum of understanding” to end the fighting, CNN reports.

“I don't know if you've heard, but today we ended the war with Iran,” the US leader said in a televised broadcast in support of Georgia Lt. Gov. Burt Jones, who is running for governor.

“They agreed to never have nuclear weapons, which I insisted on. That was the main goal. That was 95 percent of the agreement,” Trump added.

Trump's statement came shortly after he announced he had called off further strikes on Iran, suggesting on Truth Social that a deal had been reached, without elaborating on its terms.

Tehran said on Friday that it had not yet made a decision on the agreement announced by the US president to end the war, thus tempering the new announcement by Trump, who mentioned that the agreement would be signed in the coming days, writes AFP.

“Iran has not reached a definitive conclusion yet”

“We just reached a very good agreement to end the war with Iran, and once the documents are finalized, which should happen in the next few days, we will probably have a signature, maybe in Europe,” the US president said from the Oval Office.

However, Iranian diplomacy assured a little later that Tehran has not yet decided to sign.

“To date, Iran has not yet reached a final conclusion on the deal,” spokesman Esmaeil Baqaei told Iranian state media.

The Republican leader said he believed Iran's Supreme Leader Mojtaba Khamenei had approved what he called “a very solid framework agreement” with the United States and suggested his Vice President JD Vance could sign it as early as “this weekend.”

Iran's semi-official Tasnim news agency, affiliated with the IRGC, also reacted, noting that Trump's statements should not be taken literally unless Iran makes official announcements.

But he did not provide any details on the content of that compromise, except that it would ensure the immediate reopening of the Strait of Hormuz after signing and the impossibility of Iran acquiring nuclear weapons.

According to a message posted on X by the office of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, Donald Trump promised that any final deal would include the “removal of enriched uranium” from Tehran.

At the same time, Trump's post reportedly surprised Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, who at the time was in the middle of a security meeting regarding Iran, according to an Israeli source.

Israel was not aware of any impending deal with Iran or any kind of approval, the source told CNN, effectively denying Trump's claims on Truth Social.

This hope for a resolution to the conflict led to a drop in the price of a barrel of Brent oil from the North Sea, a reference in the world market, falling by 1.11% to 89.37 dollars in the first hour on Friday. Asian markets also rose on Friday morning, with Tokyo's Nikkei up nearly 4 percent and Seoul's Kospi up more than 7 percent.
