“Putting pressure on the Kremlin.” Ursula von der Leyen after talks with Zelensky


The President of the European Commission and the President of the European Council, Antonio Costa, together with the leaders of the EU and NATO countries, talked by phone on Saturday with the President of Ukraine, Volodymyr Zelensky, before the meeting of the presidents of the US and Ukraine scheduled for Sunday, devoted to peace talks.
Von der Leyen noted in a post on Platform X that the EU supports all actions leading to “a just and lasting peace that will preserve Ukraine's sovereignty and territorial integrity” and strengthen its defense capabilities as “an integral part of the security of the entire continent.”

She also announced that in 2026 the European Commission will continue to “put pressure on the Kremlin”, maintain support for Ukraine and intensively support it on its path to EU membership.
Antonio Costa spoke up
Costa, in turn, said that he and other European leaders talked with President Zelensky to coordinate positions before talks with President Donald Trump. He stressed that EU support for Ukraine “will not weaken in times of war, peace and reconstruction.”
The President of the European Council pointed out that recent EU decisions have strengthened Ukraine, including: by securing financing for its needs for the next two years, long-term freezing of Russian state assets and extending sanctions against Russia, with the possibility of introducing new ones.
He also emphasized that a strong and prosperous Ukraine in the EU is a key guarantee of Europe's security. He also declared further cooperation with partners from the United States to achieve lasting peace for Ukraine.
