The UK returns to Erasmus. End of the post-Brexit break

Great Britain will re-join the Erasmus student exchange program, the government in London announced on Wednesday. In December 2020, the UK exited this program due to its post-Brexit trade deal with the European Union.


The government announced that the UK will allocate approximately £570 million to the program covering the 2027/2028 academic year. The statement reads that A 30% discount has been negotiated compared to what would be paid under the current trade agreement with the EU.
British Secretary of State for the Constitution and EU Relations Nick Thomas-Symonds described the decision to return to Erasmus as “a huge success” benefiting young people.
“It's about more than just travel: it's about future skills, academic success and ensuring the next generation has access to the best opportunities,” he said. He also emphasized that “today's agreements prove that our new partnership with the EU is bringing results.”
The Guardian newspaper reported, citing sources, that Under the agreement, EU students studying at British universities under the Erasmus program will be exempt from international feesbut they will have to pay the equivalent of council charges, which are capped at £9,535 a year.
“In return, UK students will continue to pay standard domestic fees to their home (British) university throughout their year of study in Europe. At the same time, they will be able to apply for a scholarship to help them cover additional living costs abroad,” the British newspaper explained.
Being outside the Erasmus program, Britons studying in EU countries pay higher international rates, while students from EU countries at British universities must pay tuition fees of up to £38,000. pounds per year.
In the 2018–2019 academic year, the last year when the Erasmus program operated in the UK, 18,300 Britons studied in EU countries, and approx. students from EU countries studied at British universities.
In total, almost 1.5 million people and 85,600 universities, colleges and organizations participated in the Erasmus program in 2024.
