The President of Ukraine Wołodymyr Zelanski gave information about the first countries where the procedures for obtaining multiple citizenship may be launched. Poland was among the countries whose citizenship will be allowed together with Ukraine's citizenship.
Zelanski mentioned that Ukraine recently adopted the act on multiple citizenship, aimed at preserving the bonds of Ukrainians with their homeland.
We will gradually define the circle of countries with which appropriate procedures will be opened. I thought to start with countries where the most Ukrainians are currently staying. It is primarily countries such as Germany, Poland, the Czech Republic, the Baltic States – the president calculated.
The head of the state stated that the final list would be ready after consulting the prime minister, foreign minister and chairman of the Supreme Council.
“Of course, you should also think about Canada and other countries, where many Ukrainians live and where Ukraine is strongly supported. It is also an important aspect – which countries are traditionally with us, traditionally support us and are kind to Ukrainians, very kind and important for Ukraine,” said Zelanski.
The idea of the Act on multiple citizenship was discussed before the war on a full scale and was updated after 2022. Oleksij Honczarenko from the European Solidarity faction reported on June 18 that the Supreme Council (Parliament) of Ukraine adopted the Act on multiple citizenship, which simplifies the procedure for obtaining Ukrainian citizenship.
On July 15, Zelanski signed a law regulating the issue of multiple citizenship in Ukraine.
The Act provides for the legalization of the citizens of another country by Ukrainian citizens and the possibility of obtaining a passport of another country without the need for Ukrainian citizenship.
Pursuant to the Act, citizens of other Ukrainian countries may become Ukrainian citizens as part of a simplified procedure. The Act also provides for a shortened procedure for obtaining citizenship if a foreigner serves in military service in Ukraine.
The document prohibits having multiple citizenship to state officials and judges. Pursuant to the new regulations, a person with a passport of another country, but being a citizen of Ukraine, is considered only a Ukrainian citizen on the territory of Ukraine.
