Ioan Varga Revises Financial Support for CFR Cluj, Plans Changes

Initially expressing intentions to limit his financial backing for CFR Cluj to this season only, Ioan Varga has recently revealed a change of heart regarding his plans.
After appointing a Swiss president to the club, Varga had suggested he would withdraw his financial support, expecting the new official to secure additional investors. However, he now appears to have reconsidered. In statements made to GSP.ro, the businessman confirmed his intention to retain at least 50% of the club’s shares. He noted that if he can secure necessary funds for the team’s operation, he would not sell any of his shares.
Varga’s Surprising Announcement: “It’s Possible for Me to Continue Solely at CFR Cluj”
“Let’s see what the Swiss president does. I want to see actions, not just words. He needs to bring in money to prove his seriousness. When I joined CFR Cluj, I invested €8 million right away without having seen a match or knowing any players, just to address debts. Since then, I’ve invested another €100 million. Now, I’ve taken a step back and want to see what the Swiss can do. They must bring funds to the club as promised.
Without money, it’s impossible. I won’t hand over the club without any evidence of their commitment and investment. Who wouldn’t want to acquire a club like CFR Cluj for free? But that’s not feasible.
I’ve mentioned that this transaction involves two steps. First, they need to demonstrate seriousness and financial capability. Only after that will we discuss share transfer. I currently hold 80% of the shares and am willing to sell 39% for a price, but if they fail to show commitment, I won’t sell anything! It’s entirely possible that I could continue to run the club myself. If I manage my business affairs effectively, I might remain the sole owner. We’ll see how it unfolds!
It’s extremely challenging to sustain a club with your own funds, especially when facing criticism. I’m involved in football out of passion and want to support the city. However, the city offers no assistance to me. Unlike U Cluj, we do not receive aid; we pay a stadium tax of €150,000 annually, while they play in a state-funded facility. It’s unfair! But it is what it is. We will push forward and see what happens,” Varga stated to Gazeta Sporturilor.
