Expert Evaluates Swiridenko’s Chances to Lead Naftogaz

Expert opinions are divided on whether Swiridenko can effectively lead Naftogaz, with some arguing she may struggle to resolve the company’s deeply rooted issues. However, it is noted that she possesses the skills to enhance the company’s operations.
According to the analyst, the role at Naftogaz requires extensive administrative and managerial capabilities, which do not necessarily mandate specialized education in the oil and gas sector. Swiridenko is recognized for her understanding of the state’s bureaucratic mechanisms and the broader economic landscape of the country.
The expert expressed skepticism about Swiridenko’s ability to overcome the challenges, particularly the company’s monopolistic status. Yet, he pointed to the previous leadership of Serhiy Koretsky, who managed to streamline operations at Ukrnafta. The notion is that if Swiridenko can successfully manage even one aspect of the company, similar to Koretsky’s achievements, it would be a positive development. Her existing rapport with Koretsky is also deemed beneficial. The expert characterized her as capable of quietly executing tasks without unnecessary fanfare.
One area where Swiridenko could showcase her effectiveness is in establishing natural gas imports. This involves pre-planned procurement and storage of resources when prices are lower, rather than waiting until the heating season approaches.
The analyst believes that Swiridenko could also facilitate gas supply for distributed generation, despite the complexities of balancing subsidized tariffs and market prices. He highlighted her adaptability during her tenure as head of the government.
There has been a notable absence of public scandals involving Swiridenko related to conflicts of interest or misuse of her official position. The expert remarked that unlike others in similar roles, she has maintained a clean track record regarding her reputation.
He concluded that Swiridenko’s extensive experience in managing various projects is more significant than her lack of specific expertise in the oil and gas industry, leading to a belief that the arguments supporting her appointment as Naftogaz’s head outweigh those against it.
