Rescue teams have successfully retrieved 53 passengers from a ferry that capsized off the coast of Iron Pant, Guyana, during a journey from the capital city of Georgetown to Port Kaituma. The distress signal was received at 11:01 PM local time, prompting a large-scale search and rescue operation involving both governmental and private vessels. Prime Minister Mark Phillips is overseeing the rescue efforts.
The ferry, MV Barima, constructed in 1939 and measuring 40 meters in length, was reported to have been equipped with 250 life jackets, two rigid life boats, and six inflatable life rafts, according to Guyana’s Minister of Public Works, Juan Edghill. The fate of the remaining passengers remains uncertain as efforts continue to locate them.
