Scandal Erupts Over Derby Winner Vijelie Sti’s Doping Control Refusal

The recent Derby victor, Vijelie Sti, has sparked a major scandal after its owners declined a doping test required by CSM Ploiești, the race organizers. Despite the refusal, the horse was not disqualified by the Racing Commission, leading to accusations of bias and calls for further investigation.
Held at the Ploiești racetrack, this historic event is seen as a significant competition for four-year-old horses in Romania. The controversy began when Vijelie Sti’s owners denied officials access to collect samples for doping control, raising suspicions of possible avoidance of a positive test result.
Reports from Observatorul de Prahova highlighted the issue, which has prompted a formal appeal process. Many within the racing community are outraged by the Commission’s decision to maintain Vijelie Sti’s status as the winner despite the blatant refusal to test.
Financial Penalties and Access Ban Imposed
While Vijelie Sti remains listed as the Derby winner, the owners face financial penalties amounting to 4,000 lei, which is 50% of the total prize purse. Additionally, they have been banned from the racetrack for 60 days under Article 95, Clause 3 of the Romanian Racing Regulations, which stipulates punishment for not submitting a horse for testing.
However, critics argue that the Commission’s decision contradicts a later clause (Article 111) that calls for disqualification in cases of rule violations. Constantin Dumitrescu, a member of the Racing Commission, expressed confusion about the regulations, stating, “The rules are ambiguous, and the sequence of articles lacks clarity regarding the refusal to allow tests.”
Owner Claims Conspiracy and Past Trauma
Nicolae Marin, the de facto owner of Vijelie Sti, voiced his concerns regarding the doping control refusal, alleging a personal vendetta against him. He recounted a previous incident where the same veterinary doctor administered a lethal injection to another horse, leading to its sudden death due to anaphylaxis. Marin lamented the lack of proper testing in recent years, questioning why only his horse was targeted.
Marin warned that if the appeal results in disqualification, he would take drastic action against the racetrack operations, describing the current state of the facility as illegal and disorganized. He criticized the lack of proper safety measures and regulatory compliance, asserting, “This racetrack operates in total illegality. I will sue them and shut it down!”
Marin suggested that there is a greater conspiracy at play, claiming there were significant bets on other horses, hinting at financial motivations behind the targeting of his horse.
Calls for Clearer Regulations and Accountability
Marian Manea, whose horse placed fourth in the Derby, echoed concerns regarding the fairness of the outcome. He argued that a responsible owner would accept doping tests to avoid disputes later. He compared the situation to football, stating, “If a player refuses a drug test, the team loses automatically!” Manea insisted that the regulations should be observed strictly to maintain the integrity of the sport.
The Appeals Commission is set to convene soon, and the outcome could have significant implications for all parties involved. As the situation unfolds, stakeholders in Romanian horse racing await clarity and resolution regarding this contentious issue.
