How to calculate the general average (in middle school and high school) and the annual grade (in grades I-IV)
These days, teachers and educators complete school situations for more than two million students. If in middle school and high school averages are calculated according to clear mathematical rules, in primary education the procedure is different and often raises questions among parents. The regulation of the Ministry of Education, ROFUIP 2024, establishes exactly how grades are awarded and how the overall average is calculated.
Throughout the school year, middle school and high school students are evaluated by grades, and averages are calculated mathematically, while primary school students receive grades, and determining the final result also involves an assessment of the progress made during the school year.
How to determine averages and the annual qualification in primary classes
In primary education, students are evaluated by grades: Very Good (FB), Good (B), Sufficient (S) and Insufficient (I). The annual qualification, i.e. the result recorded at the end of the school year, is usually determined according to the dominant qualification. If at the end of the year there is an equal number of grades from two different categories – for example, the same number of FB and B -, the student is reevaluated. The new qualification obtained after the evaluation establishes the weight and allows the school situation to be concluded without any equality between the qualifications.
According to Cristina H., teacher for primary education, in determining the annual qualification, not only the frequency of the qualifications matters, but also the student's evolution during the school year. “If a student obtained Good grades at the beginning of the year, and later received mostly Very Good, the annual grade can be Very Good, because constant progress is observed. On the other hand, if the situation is the opposite and the student starts the year with Very Good, and then receives several Good grades, the annual grade can be Good, because an involution is noted,” explains the teacher.
