Maria Machado with the Nobel Peace Prize
Machado was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in October 2025 for her “tireless work on behalf of the democratic rights of the Venezuelan people and for fighting for a just and peaceful transition from dictatorship to democracy.”
The oppositionist won an overwhelming victory in the primaries of the democratic camp in Venezuela, but the authorities blocked her candidacy in the July 2024 presidential elections. Her party then supported another opposition candidate, Edmundo Gonzalez Urrutia.
After the elections, the regime announced that Nicolas Maduro had won, but the government's opponents presented voting records proving that Gonzalez had won. Protests broke out in the country, brutally suppressed by the government. An arrest warrant was issued for Gonzalez, who was granted political asylum in Spain.
