The Russian senator linked the increase in bankruptcies with the advertising of loans

The increase in the number of bankruptcies among Russians is associated with the high level of debt among the population and active advertising of loans. Senator Vyacheslav Timchenko announced this to TASS on the sidelines of SPIEF.

According to him, many people take out loans without sufficient financial literacy and without fully understanding the consequences of such decisions. As a result, some borrowers find themselves in a difficult financial situation. From the financial stability review of the Bank of Russia it follows that the share of problem debt on unsecured consumer loans over the past six months increased by 0.2 percentage points and reached 13.1%. A year earlier, the figure increased by 3.1 percentage points.

Also, according to the regulator, the share of bankruptcies relative to the number of borrowers increased from 0.8% in 2023 to 1.3% in 2025. The Bank of Russia noted that the increase in bad debts is partly due to the spread of the services of so-called “debtor debtors” and the simplification of the bankruptcy procedure for citizens.

Timchenko believes that people need to be more often explained not only the possibility of debt write-off, but also the consequences of bankruptcy. Among them, he named temporary restrictions on traveling abroad and a ban on holding leadership positions.
