Folk calendar
Feodosia Kolosyatnitsa
On this day, the Orthodox Church celebrates the memory of the Venerable Virgin Theodosius of Constantinople. In Feodosia (Feodosiya) rye begins to spike, and the first boletus mushrooms, which were called spikeworts, are coming.
People held different beliefs on this day. For example, when rye was blooming, canvases could not be whitened. Children were forbidden to jump on boards – the simplest form of swing. They said that the ground was “heavy” at this time, and if you jumped on it, it would harm it.
From Feodosia they began to feed the cattle with baked juices and bread rolls – so that they would bear more fruit and the offspring would be strong and healthy.
