Russia has every chance to take first place in the world in terms of gold production in the coming years. Alexey Vostokov, general director of Polyus, the country’s largest gold mining company, said this in an interview with RBC-TV.
Currently, Russia ranks second among the world's gold producers, second only to China, he said.
“According to our estimates, 7-8 years, perhaps 10 years, is the period that is enough for the country to become a leader in gold mining,” noted Alexey Vostokov.
According to him, one of the key projects will be the development of the Sukhoi Log field in the Irkutsk region. In addition, the development of the industry will be facilitated by new projects of both Polyus and its market colleagues in Yakutia, Khabarovsk Territory, Transbaikalia, Chukotka and other regions of the country, as well as the modernization of existing enterprises.
To implement these projects, Polyus has significantly increased the volume of investments. In 2025, the company's capital expenditures increased by 73%, reaching $2.18 billion. The bulk of the funds are aimed at the development of Sukhoi Log, as well as new projects Chulbatkan in the Khabarovsk Territory and Chertovo Koryto in the Irkutsk Region.
The head of the company also noted that the development of Sukhoi Log has already entered an active phase: the pilot stage and the construction of the infrastructure of the future mining and processing complex are underway at the field.
