Péter Magyar provokes Slovakia. The words of the Hungarian Prime Minister caused a storm

Slovak-Hungarian relations are not going well after Prime Minister Peter Magyar came to power. Magyar still has not met with Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico because he has a problem with amending the law that criminalizes questioning and criticizing Benes' decrees.
Recently, the mood between Bratislava and Budapest has become even more tense. On June 4, Hungarians celebrated the anniversary of the signing of the Trianon Peace Treaty, which established new borders between the successor states of the Austro-Hungarian monarchy after World War I. Hungarians still view Trianon as a cause for regret and celebrate June 4 every year as National Solidarity Day.

The Hungarian Prime Minister gave a speech on Thursday at Kossuth Square in Budapest, which outraged the Slovak Foreign Minister Juraj Blanár. He stated, among other things, that Hungary is “the only country in the world that neighbors itself.”

The head of the Slovak Ministry of Foreign Affairs responds to Magyar's words. “Absurd”

What Magyar meant was that after Trianon, millions of Hungarians remained outside the country. Over 400 thousand of them still live in Slovakia. In his speech, Magyar also mentioned Slovakia.

— We must stand up for our compatriots from Felvidek [Słowacji]whose private property is still confiscated, citing the Benes decree. Every year there are hundreds of such incidents that trample on European values and legal order. And those who dare to criticize it risk imprisonment, said the Hungarian Prime Minister, quoted by Napunk.

It didn't take long for Bratislava to react. Minister Blanár called Magyar's words absurd. “He says that Hungary is Hungary's neighbor. Such an absurd and history-denying statement was made by the new Hungarian Prime Minister on the occasion of National Unity Day at Kossuth Square. He literally said that Hungary is probably the only country in the world that is its own neighbor. I reject this vision of “history”“Blanár wrote on social media.

Peter Magyar calls for the expansion of the V4. However, he only visited Poland

“No, dear Prime Minister of Hungary. Your, and therefore our, borders are clearly defined thanks to the Trianon peace negotiations after World War I and confirmed after World War II, where Hungary, incidentally, sided with the defeated“- added the head of Slovak diplomacy.

According to Blanár, Slovakia rejects any questioning of the borders, territorial integrity and sovereignty of the Slovak Republic. “If friendly and constructive relations between our countries are to be maintained, it will be without false irredentism and questioning of history,” he concluded.

Magyar also spoke today in Budapest about the need for good relations. The Hungarian Prime Minister said he wants to work for more countries to join the V4. He replaced it Austria, Slovenia, Romania, Croatia and Germany.

But among the V4 countries, he has so far visited Poland as part of bilateral visits and says little about Slovakia. “We believe that re-strengthening Czech-Hungarian and Polish-Hungarian relations is very important to us,” he said in April.
