NATO confirms that the drone that crashed over a block of flats in Galati is of Russian origin, being identified as a “Geran-2” model.

The spokesman of the Supreme Command of the Allied Forces in Europe (SHAPE), Martin O'Donnell, confirmed on Friday, May 29, that the drone is of Russian origin, reports Reuters.
The Romanian Ministry of Defense also specified that the aircraft that crashed in Galați is a “Geran-2” type, of Russian origin.
He stated that the fighter jets had permission to open fire, but it was not fired because there was a risk that the projectiles would cause damage in Galați or reach outside Romania, which could have been interpreted as involvement in the war in Ukraine.
A drone crashed on Friday night over a block of flats in Galati, causing an explosion and a fire in an apartment located on the 10th floor. A RO-ALERT message was issued for Brăila, Tulcea and Galati. Two people were injured and transported to the hospital, and approximately 70 residents were evacuated. The incident, considered the most serious of this type on Romanian territory since the beginning of the war in Ukraine, determined the emergency convening of the CSAT.
President Nicușor Dan announced the expulsion of the consul general of the Russian Federation in Constanța and the closing of the consulate.
The head of state also assigned full responsibility to Moscow, condemned the Romanian political leaders who try to excuse Russia and announced urgent measures to accelerate the anti-aircraft and anti-drone defense programs in partnership with NATO, the USA and Ukraine.
