Folk calendar
Sidor Bokogrey
On this day, the Orthodox Church honors the memory of Saint Isidore, renamed by the Russian people as Sidor. The saint was nicknamed Bokogray because on his holiday the northern winds, the “sivers,” stop blowing. People said: “On the day of Sidor, all the Sivers will leave.” Also, swifts and killer whales fly to Sidor from across the warm seas, bringing warmth to Rus'.
The early return of swallows promised a happy year. At the same time they said: “One swallow does not make spring”; “Don't trust the first killer whale.” This meant that only a massive arrival of birds could be evidence of the final arrival of heat.
On this day, they paid attention to signs. If the day on Sidor was clear, then they expected a good harvest of cucumbers. If the weather was cold, then the whole summer should have been like that.
