At least a fourth Russian refinery shut down after drone strikes in May

The Syzran oil refinery (refinery) in the Samara region of the Russian Federation suspended operations after a drone attack on May 21. Reuters reported this on May 25, citing industry sources.

Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky previously announced his defeat on Telegram, publishing a video of the consequences of drone strikes.

According to Reuters interlocutors, after the attack, the CDU-6 unit, which provides more than 70% of the plant’s production capacity, was disabled.

Repairing damaged equipment may take more than a month, the media writes.

The Syzran oil refinery belongs to the Russian company Rosneft. Its design capacity is 8.5 million tons of oil per year, or approximately 170 thousand barrels per day.

According to Reuters, in 2024 the plant processed 4.3 million tons of oil and produced 1.5 million tons of diesel fuel, 800 thousand tons of gasoline and 700 thousand tons of fuel oil.

In May, Reuters also reported that other Russian refineries had suspended or significantly curtailed operations following drone attacks.

In particular, after the attack on May 15, the Ryazan Oil Refinery suspended operations, and after the attack on May 17, the Moscow Oil Refinery suspended operations. Subsequently, in the Nizhny Novgorod region it was forced to suspend the main installation of the NORSI refinery.
