In Krasnoyarsk, a 52-year-old woman lost 6.1 million rubles after calling Max about “replacing the intercom.” The attackers used a complex scheme, involving legends about Roskomnadzor, the Central Bank and the FSB in the deception, the regional prosecutor’s office said.
An unknown man called Krasnoyarsk at the end of April. He introduced himself as an employee of a company that installs intercoms, informed about the replacement of equipment and asked for the code from the SMS to access the device to the apartment. The woman dictated the code, after which the scammers hacked her personal account on State Services.
Immediately after this, other scammers contacted her and introduced themselves as employees of Roskomnadzor, the Central Bank and the FSB. They convinced the woman that they had issued a power of attorney in her name to a stranger who could manage her property, and she herself risked becoming an accomplice of extremists. To revoke the power of attorney, the woman was told not to tell anyone anything and to immediately withdraw all money from her accounts.
The victim of deception withdrew almost 5 million rubles of her own savings from banks and transferred them through ATMs to dictated accounts. The next day, the scammers contacted her husband. The man, seeing his wife’s condition, withdrew the remaining money, some of which the spouses transferred through an ATM and a phone shop.
Only after this did the family realize that they had been deceived. The total damage amounted to 6.1 million rubles. According to the victim, she heard about similar schemes, but believed it because the scammers intimidated her with a story about connections with extremists and forced her to act in secret. A criminal case has been initiated under Part 4 of Article 159 of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation (fraud on an especially large scale).
The department also reports that since the beginning of the year, 2,223 people have already become victims of Internet criminals in the Krasnoyarsk Territory. The damage caused amounted to 937.5 million rubles. Over the past week alone, more than 47 million rubles were remotely stolen from 105 residents of the region.
