Energy blow: the Iernut plant, a project blocked for 10 years, becomes a national emergency. Bolojan announces that Romgaz is taking over the completion of the works

“In the Government meeting on Thursday, this week, we approved the memorandum for the Iernut gas plant. It confirms, at the governmental level, that the project of the Iernut plant, with a power of 430 MW, is extremely urgent. The project started over 10 years ago and should have been completed in 3 years. The delay generated financial losses, problems related to investment and energy costs at the national level. Romgaz will take over as of general contractor“, Ilie Bolojan sent on Facebook.
The interim prime minister explained that through the same memorandum, the emergency character is extended for the entire duration of the remaining works until the completion of the plant, a measure that allows the rapid continuation of the project.
“Extends the nature of urgency to the entire duration of the necessary works until the plant is put into operation. This allows Romgaz to conclude contracts with the almost 50 former subcontractors of the Spanish firm Duro Felguera. The company has abandoned the works for the second time, entering bankruptcy. The rest to be executed, approximately 2%, must be completed by the same subcontractors, both for the continuity of the works and to maintain the guarantees”claimed the interim prime minister.
Ilie Bolojan also emphasized the strategic nature of the investment, showing that the completion of the plant could significantly contribute to Romania's energy security.
“Reconfirms the major public interest character of the project. The commissioning of the plant will cover the deficit of electricity in the band and contribute to the balancing of the national energy system”he also transmitted.
The memorandum comes following a request from the technical team managing the project, after the visit to Iernut on May 9.
“Next week we will adopt another government decision, which will solve a property problem regarding a transformer station needed for the new power plant. If I were to use a sports term, from now on the ball is in the court of the technical team from Iernut, led by Mr. Engineer Balazs Bela, and the management of Romgaz. I trust that, at the end of this year, the new energy group will inject energy into the national energy system. We cannot afford another delay”. concluded Ilie Bolojan.
