A PNL leader, attack at midnight against Ilie Bolojan, without even saying his name: “The situation seems hallucinatory to me”

PNL MEP Rareș Bogdan, without mentioning his name, accused the Prime Minister and Liberal President Ilie Bolojan for his criticism of the nuclear mini-reactors project that would be developed in Doicești, Dâmbovița county, together with the Americans.

In a post written on Wednesday evening, close to midnight, Rareș Bogdan reacted to the statements made by Bolojan just a few tens of minutes before in a show on B1 TV.

“The Doicești project, based on the technology of small modular reactors (SMR), is the flagship of the Romanian-American civil-nuclear partnership. The reversal of the situation we are witnessing is a geopolitical movement of rare severity. The US has strategic interests in the region. We have, so to speak, because we are next to the Russians. Who entered Ukraine. What else can we talk about the Republic of Moldova?

I mean Poland just massively cemented a partnership with the US to build their first nuclear power plant. But Warsaw delivers, Bucharest pulls the handbrake. As long as Romania and Poland are pillars of the eastern flank, the situation seems hallucinatory to me. Will there be a shock wave in the diplomatic relationship?”, asks Rareș Bogdan.

  • After strongly supporting the former prime minister and president of the PNL, Nicolae Ciucă, Rareș Bogdan lost his place in the leadership of the PNL with the arrival of the Bolojan team.

The MEP then refers to Bolojan's statements related to the high price of the project. “several billion dollars”.

“Costs, I understand. But this is not the only criterion by which we must look. Our energy security, our strategic armoring has costs. Because if we look at it from the perspective of expenses, I could prove to you that we had an American alternative to Rheinmetall. Romania-energy hub is a project that started for some time. It has many components, adjacent plans, projects that go along the same axis. Do you remember the Constanța-Gdansk Corridor, actively supported by the USA for the mobility of the eastern flank? After all, Nuclearelectrica has experience in the operation of classic reactors, that is, it could become a technology hub,” says Bogdan.

He insists on the relationship with the USA. “The stake of consolidating American interests in the area is enormous for our security. And we still have the cards in our hands: energy storage solutions that Romania has and help free it from Chinese lithium (I will detail it another time), rare metals, the premium ammunition we can produce. And the Americans want partners. Government to government partnerships are the solution, because both states win equally. And Romania's strongest and fairest security partner should be the USA.”

In the end, Rareș Bogdan issues a warning and a new reference to Bolojan, also without saying his name.

“The bills for such radical gestures come not in the form of direct bills, but in the form of strategic 'cooling.' Romania needs US support for the billions of dollars needed for Units 3 and 4 at Cernavodă. Omitting or blocking Doicești could make Washington much more rigid, more bureaucratic or less generous. In addition, such a sudden withdrawal from a project of such magnitude sends a signal of high-level political unpredictability,” he adds.
